Opelousas Native’s Award-Winning Wine Brand to Appear in New Tyler Perry Movie, ‘Nobody’s Fool’

Opelousas native, Dr. Dawna Darjean Jones, is a plant pathologist turned winemaker. She launched Darjean Jones Wines in 2010. It is a small boutique wine company, but after Jones received an back in May her business has been receiving a lot more attention. “I was absolutely shocked. It was a one-liner that said, “Are you interested in having your wines in a Tyler Perry movie?”. The answer was pretty much a no-brainer. I said absolutely and the conversations just started from there,” said Jones.

Jones said her wine was overnighted to Tyler Perry Studio less than a week after she received that email. The award-winning wine will be featured in the new movie, Nobody’s Fool, which hit theatres Friday, November 2nd. “I’ve seen several versions of the trailer come out and in each one I can pick out the wine bottles somewhere. So anytime you see wine glasses, look for a bottle in the background and it seems to be one of my wines,” said Jones.

Darjean Jones Wines is made in California, but Jones’ home base is Texas. She was born and raised in Opelousas where part of her family still resides. Her mother Priscilla Darjean said she couldn’t be happier for her daughter, “I just didn’t think that would happen. That she could have her wine displayed in a movie, especially a Tyler Perry movie, but oh my goodness. It felt so good. I’m so proud.”

Jones has four different wines that may all appear in the movie, “I actually make a Russian River Viognier, I make a Rose of Tempranillo. I also do a Napa Valley Merlot, a Napa Valley Cabernet Franc and I have a proprietary red blend that I call Pathologiē which is a play on my background in plant pathology.” As her business continues to become more popular, Jones is looking forward to the movie’s premiere, “We’ll see which ones have actually ended up in the movie.”

Jones is hosting a private movie screening on Saturday, November 3rd at Star Cinema Grill in Cypress, Texas. Tickets can be purchased at Eventbrite.com.
